THERE’S A PLACE…THE BEATLES IN MANCHESTER!
There’s a place and it’s Manchester according to Beatle fan Paul Wilde from Urmston
who is launching a website to celebrate the towns association with the Fab Four.
The fact is it gave the group a number of ‘firsts’ before any other town!
And this is an untold story with the site aiming to put the record straight!
Within its pages he documents The Beatles public appearances and broadcast history from the city. This includes first radio, first TV and first professional engagement under Brian Epstein to occur outside of Liverpool. And did you know the group took part in an outdoor festival, which is regarded as the forerunner to the popular music festivals that take place around the country today. This was in a park in Urmston back in 1963 and a place he wants the local council to recognise with a commemorative plaque.
”The Beatles place in history is certain and now local authorities around the country are recognising the fact as it brings people to the cities. We in Manchester should do the same! Urmston was a unique concert. It was different as it was outdoors and a first for The Beatles.
A fact we should celebrate!” enthuses Paul who also wants to stage a convention in 2009.
As a fan and regular at the Beatles convention in Liverpool he wants local fans to enjoy a similar experience and have a Manchester Beatle Day to remember!
Also he is looking for eyewitness accounts from those who saw The Beatles in Manchester. Whether it was in the audience, on the street or in a studio he wants your recollections for inclusion on the website and in a book at some point.
.
”This site is for historical reference which we need to document now” says Paul
”I hope we can discover some new facts along the way and establish if rumours such as The Beatles played at The Embassy are true or false?!. Maybe we can unearth something new to add to the Fab Four story plus ensure we put Manchester on the Beatle map well and truly”
He hopes to stage a tour of the sites in the New Year and is looking to make contact with the local council in order to get them onboard in recognising the importance of the connection.
He reckons the many Beatle fans that flock to Liverpool should hop on the bus or train to
Manchester and visit the sites. As such Paul is looking for a landmark site in the city centre
to pair up with as a museum. Is there anybody out there interested or have the room?
As a cartoonist Paul also produces his own caricature version of The Beatles plus other Merseybeat heroes which you’ll find scattered on the site which is informative and fun!
The site also celebrates the Manchester personalities that played their part in
’The Beatles in Manchester’ story such as Johnny Hamp, the Granada TV producer
responsible for the first Beatle TV broadcast who he hopes to interview at some point.
As far as Paul is concerned the city of Manchester was the gateway to the world for The Beatles and its story by association is contained within the pages of this unique website found at http://www.thebeatlesinmanchester.co.uk/. From here you can contact Paul and send
your stories plus get (inserted regular) regular updates re future Manchester Beatle events.
